Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon (2018) Review
The best and the smart choice?
Lenovo is well-known for its distinguished laptop designs. ThinkPad series from Lenovo is quite popular. Lenovo released ThinkPad X1 Carbon in 2018 and it has got all the features one might want in a premium quality laptop. Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon is designed very well. The use of carbon fiber as the main material for the chassis of this laptop makes it more elegant. The laptop is also a bit slimmer than its competitors and features a great battery. Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon has got a lot more under the hood. Let’s have an in-depth look at each feature of this laptop.
Modern and Smart Design
The most obvious detail of any laptop is its design. You might take one look at a laptop and decide if that is the laptop you want on your desk or table. It is not an appropriate way to choose a laptop but it’s true that the design of the laptop matters a lot. Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon has a great design and you will definitely love it. I wouldn’t say it is an eye-candy but its design is much better than a lot of its competitors.
Size and Dimensions
ThinkPad X1 Carbon is a 14-inch laptop with the dimensions of 12.7 x 8.5 x 0.6 inches. The laptop is not that small in size but fits perfectly in your hand or bag when you are on the move. The carbon fiber material feels really good when you are holding the laptop. The traditional hinge works great and you can move the lid up and down with a soft hand.
Thinkpad Signature Logo
The ThinkPad series from Lenovo always comes with the “ThinkPad” signature logo. Usually, the logo is placed on the backside of the lid in silver color but this time Lenovo has gone for the black color which makes it more graceful. The logo is placed on the upper left side on the backside of the lid and also right under the keyboard. Lenovo has also differentiated this series by placing “X1” logon the lower right side on the backside of the lid. Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon comes in 2 colors, black and dark silver. In my opinion, the black color looks really great.
The laptop is not that heavy, actually, it is much lighter when compared to its competitors. It weighs almost 2.5 pounds. ThinkPad X1 Carbon is even lighter than 13-inch laptops. Most popular laptops in the 13-inch display category are the 13-inch MacBook Pro (3 pounds) and Dell XPS 13 (2.65 pounds) and Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon is lighter than both of them.
Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon also features a fingerprint sensor for better security. Fingerprint sensors are not that common with all the top laptop manufacturers but almost all the top manufacturers have realized the importance of fingerprint sensors lately. The fingerprint sensors work great and placed on the left side of touchpad right below the keyboard.
Camera and ThinkShutter
ThinkPad also features an IR camera. The IR camera is optional though. Infrared camera option is for the Windows Hello which is facial recognition security in Windows 1o from Microsoft. Besides this IR camera option, a webcam is placed above the display and it can be covered through a cover or as Lenovo calls it “ThinkShutter”. ThinkShutter is for security purposes and protects your privacy from any possible threat or monitoring through the webcam. The webcam features a 720p camera which can capture the images. Obviously, the quality of those images is not that great.
Ports and Slots
This ThinkPad features a good combination of ports. There are two type-C or Thunderbolt 3 ports, one HDMI port, and 2 Type-A ports. This laptop also has a microSD card slot. A 3.5 mm audio or headphones jack is also present on the right side. One of the Thunderbolt slots is used for charging the laptop as well.
On top of all, a laptop must be durable. The durability of a laptop mainly relies on the material used in the manufacturing of a laptop. The body of the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon is mostly made of carbon fiber but magnesium is also used in its manufacturing. The use of magnesium is common as other laptop manufacturers, including Microsoft, also using this metal. The combination of these two materials ensures the durability of ThinkPad X1 Carbon. Lenovo claims that ThinkPad X1 Carbon is a reliable product as it has cleared all the durability tests and withstands the extreme vibrations, shocks, temperatures.
Amazing Display Feature
Display of a laptop is definitely one of the most important features of a laptop. Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon offers a choice when it comes to the display. The touch screen display comes with the standard resolution of 1920 x 1080 in the base model of ThinkPad X1 Carbon. A non-touch HDR display with 2560 x 1440 resolution is very impressive. You can certainly enjoy watching videos on either of the screens but the colors appear more vibrant on the HDR display. Either you are watching videos or working on a graphics project, saturation or depth of all the colors, especially red and blue, will absolutely mesmerize you.
The touch display with 1920 x 1080 resolution is not bad either. The touch input works perfectly and light does not reflect from the screen as it has a glass layer on top of it. Lenovo uses in-cell touch technology to make sure that the touch layer of the screen is placed right with the LED panel of the screen. ThinkPad’s HDR display beats the displays of other laptops including the Dell XPS and MacBook Pro.
Touchpad and Keyboard
Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon features a 3.9 x 2.2-inch touchpad. Even though this touchpad works as a precision pad, the physical left and right click buttons are also there. Touchpad works perfectly and does show any lag. All the precision pad gestures respond well.
Lenovo offers a great keyboard as always. With 1.8-millimeter key travel, Keyboard of ThinkPad X1 Carbon is great for comfortable typing experience. The keys are not that big and you can easily get used to them. As this is a 14-inch laptop so there is no separate numeric keypad. The overall experience with the keyboard is actually great as you will not feel irritated while resting your wrist on the soft yet durable deck. The pointing stick the “TrackPoint” is there. TrackPoint has always been there since the first ThinkPad and Lenovo does not seem to get rid of that anytime soon. For some people TrackPoint is useful and they use it more often. Even though I am not a fan of TrackPoint, it does not bother me that much. TrackPoint could only become an issue if only it is troublesome during typing which, in my experience, it is not.
Audio and Graphics
The audio experience is great if you use headphones. The audio quality is not bad but it certainly is not top-notch. The speakers are loud and absolutely fill the room but there is a good chance that you will feel irritated by a little distortion of the sound. However, this may not be the case for all type of audios. Pre-installed Dolby audio software works automatically and adjusts the sound still you can change the settings as per your requirements.
The base model of Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon is certainly not for high-end games. This laptop features Intel UHD 620 GPU which can handle normal games but for high-end games, an external graphics card is a must.
Performance and battery life
ThinkPad X1 Carbon features a quad-core Core i5 CPU. 8GB of RAM ensures that smooth functionality. The laptop is packed with 512GB SSD. SSD is very responsive and the fast speed of SSD handles all the tasks accurately. The copying speed of this SSD is also amazing as it can transfer the data at 560MB per second. The overall performs is shockingly great. As per the results from various performance test, ThinkPad almost beats all of its competitors including MacBook Pro and Dell XPS 13. ThinkPad which comes with Core i7 processor work even better.
Battery life of Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon is also wonderful. You can easily use this laptop throughout the day on a single charge. This laptop also beats its competitors in terms of battery life. Continuous use of ThinkPad while surfing the web all day long, you can get easily get 11 hours of battery life on a single charge. A little more intense working situation will definitely lower the battery timing still it will last longer than the most. The laptop has a fast charging feature as a Thunderbolt is used for charging. As per the claims by Lenovo, this ThinkPad is capable of reaching 80 % of battery in just an hour with its standard adapter. This claim is somewhat true the laptop reaches almost 70 % in an hour which is still good enough. With all its wonders, the ThinkPad X1 Carbon starts at $1063.
