Lenovo ThinkPad T480 Review

The first thing about the design of this laptop that you need to know is that it is not slim and light. Even though consumers prefer to own a slim and sleek laptop these days but some compromises are made for such designs. Lenovo ThinkPad T480 weighs 3.58 pounds with the dimensions of 13.25 x 9.15 x 0.78 inches. If you are going to choose a model with an even larger battery than the weight of the laptop will be around 4 pounds. It is heavier than its competitors but it does not mean that it is not portable. You can easily move around with this laptop in your hand or bag. Lenovo has not changed the basic design of this series.

ThinkPad T480 is just like its predecessors T460 and T470 in terms of design as there is nothing different apparently. But it is the enhancement in performance and battery section which matters the most. ThinkPad T480 looks perfect in raven-black color. On the back of the lid, you will find the ThinkPad logo on the upper left corner and Lenovo logo on the lower right corner. You can easily lift the lid which minimum power. You will not feel much resistance by the hinge mechanism either.

Ports and Power Button

ThinkPad T480 features all the ports you might need in a sturdy design. On the right side, you will find an HDMI port, 2 USB 3.0 ports, an Ethernet port, an SD card reader, and a headphone jack. Lenovo has not made any compromises when it comes to the durability of this laptop. ThinkPad T480 can withstand all the extreme situations of vibrations and temperatures. Through various bump tests, Lenovo has made sure that moderate bumps will not do any harm to the laptop’s internal parts. You can certainly rely on ThinkPad T480.

ThinkPad T480 features a good enough display with 1920 x 1080 resolution. The screen panel is non-touch. The screen quality is normal. You can still enjoy your favorite movies on the sharp enough screen and the viewing angles are good. As Display was not the main focus of Lenovo while designing this laptop so you should not expect something extraordinary. ThinkPad certainly has no competition with the premium quality laptops as its display quality is nowhere near to those laptops. The brightness of the display is not that great either. You will not feel anything different about display if you are currently using a laptop with a normal display. Bezels of the screen are also pretty standard.

Audio and Graphics

ThinkPad T480 features a pretty great speaker. You can definitely enjoy music and videos without an external set of speakers. We did not find any distortion in the sound. You can enjoy loud and clear sound on normal settings but with the pre-installed Dolby app, you can change the settings. You can find Dolby audio settings inside the Lenovo Vantage settings. If you use speakers or microphone for skype call on your laptop while typing, you can find the option to filter out the sound of key striking.

You can choose an optional graphics card NVidia MX150 GPU in ThinkPad T480. This graphics card allows you to carry out some basic graphics work and play low-end games. This graphics card is certainly not for high-end gaming.

Keyboard, Touchpad, and Ponting Stick

The keyboard of ThinkPad T480 is pretty good. The key travel is 1.7 mm which is good enough for a regular typist. You will not find any in this keyboard. It is a 14-inch laptop so there is no separate numeric keypad. The touchpad on this laptop has dimensions of 3.9 x 2.6-inch. The size of the touchpad is large enough to navigate easily. You can spot buttons for right and left click above the touchpad. The touchpad is responsive and works great. You can easily get used to the multi-touch commands on this touchpad. As it appears the pointing stick or as Lenovo calls it “TrackPoint” is, of course, present in this laptop too. TrackPoint has always been there in ThinkPad series and Lenovo is not going to get rid of it anytime soon. Even though I am not a fan of TrackPoint, it does not bother me that much. TrackPoint could only become an issue if only it is troublesome during typing which, in my experience, it is not.

Battery Life

When it comes to battery life, ThinkPad T480 beats all its competitors. It is packed with a six-cell 72 watt-hour battery which can easily take you through a whole day. However, this battery is optional. You can also buy ThinkPad T480 with a 3-cell battery. You can get up to 17 and a half hours of battery timing on a single charge while surfing the interest whole day over Wi-Fi and handling simple tasks on ThinkPad T480. There is probably no other laptop with this much battery life. If you are going to buy this laptop with a 3-cell default battery then you can expect up to 8 hours of battery timing which is not bad either. Six-cell battery costs extra $29 and you will get more than double battery timing than normal. So spending extra $29 is worth it.

Final Verdict

ThinkPad T480 has almost got what you need in a laptop. With its impressive performance, you can carry out all types of tasks on this machine without any worries. If you are buying this laptop with 6-cell battery you are going to experience the best battery timing of more than 17 hours on a single charge. In my opinion, battery timing could not get better than this. Yes, it is true that there is nothing exceptional about the display on this laptop but you have got to overlook that fact if you are primarily looking for best performance and battery life in a laptop. This battery and performance do not come at a cheap price though. The base model starts at $1,049. This particular one with 6-cell battery, Core i5 processor, 8GB RAM, and 256GB SD comes at $1636. If impressive performance and long battery life in a normal looking laptop is something you need then this is the laptop for you.
